Aligning the personal values of a diverse board with the mission and needs of a nonprofit takes enormous skill in the art of persuasion. It means your role as executive director or director of development should come with an advanced degree in psychology and an extensive history of sales or marketing – which few, if any of us, have. The ultimate goal in motivating a board is achieving results through people – one-by-one. Therefore, motivating a board is an art form that requires an individualized approach within the context of a defined philosophy of mission, leadership, communication, strategic planning, evaluation and recognition. Rose Lester will be presenting an overview of how to motivate board members to advance your goals.

Presenter: Rose Lester, Lester Consulting Group Inc.

With 30 years experience in management, recruiting, marketing, fund development, and public relations including projects on a local, national, and international level, Rose honed her skills as a member of senior management with Pan American World Airways, Inc. in Miami, New York, and Los Angeles. She completed her career with Pan Am in 1981 following three years as Director of Recruitment for the Western United States.
Prior to starting her own consulting business in 1989, Rose served as executive vice president for Mercy Foundation - a non-profit organization charged with raising funds for four regional hospitals, ten schools, and a variety of social service programs located throughout Northern California.

In that capacity, she created an effective leadership and department structure, and designed a nonprofit governance model that included a 65 member Board of Directors representing corporate leaders from every segment of industry throughout Northern California. Rose was responsible for successfully directing Board of Directors, system leadership, and department staff in their efforts to build a broad base of local, regional, and national support from individuals, corporations, and foundations.

Throughout her career, Rose has earned respect for her ability to build community networks of support toward a common purpose. Her personal and professional contacts extend throughout California and include corporations, foundations, professional associations, government agencies, and boards of directors. She has published several articles and is a regular speaker at conferences and seminars on a local, regional, statewide and national level. In November 2000, Rose was chosen as Outstanding Fundraising Executive of the Year by the Association of Fundraising Professionals and was honored at the National Philanthropy Day luncheon.

The consulting team at Lester Consulting Group, Inc. specializes in providing a full range of nonprofit services including: planning studies, campaign management, board governance training, retreat facilitation, strategic planning, market research, and communications. The firm has designed and successfully implemented over 75 multi-million dollar capital and endowment campaigns.
